What to expect when you visit us.

Consultation

At the first consultation I will ask you to describe your presenting condition and  symptoms. I will ask about your medical history, general health, diet, digestive system, sleeping patterns and your emotional state. I may also feel your pulse on both wrists, and ask to look at your tongue. All this information helps to make the diagnosis.

Acupuncture Treatment

It is very common for people to be apprehensive and nervous the first time they try acupuncture. It is important to remember that you can stop the treatment at any point. I will not proceed without your consent.

Acupuncture needles are very fine and are inserted into specific points around the body, predominantly on the arms, legs, abdomen, back and head. The area where the complaint may manifest, is often not needled for example migraines are often treated by needling the foot.

Most people experience a slight tingling sensation, or a dull ache when the needles are inserted, many do not feel anything.

When all the needles (usually between 4 and 20) have been positioned and you are comfortable, I will usually leave the room to allow you to relax for 20 minutes. You will be able to call me in at any time with a bell system.

During this time people usually find themselves feeling very relaxed, and often describe a sensation of heaviness throughout their body.

Treatment can sometimes leave you feeling a bit tired, and in certain cases it might slightly aggravate the condition for a short period before you experience an improvement.

How Often?

The number of treatments will depend on your condition. Sometimes only 1 or 2 are required. Most improvements are usually noticed after 5 or 6 treatments.
